Research On Logical Expressivism

Welcome to the Research on Logical Expressivism group (ROLE). The group is organized primarily by Ulf Hlobil (Concordia University) and Robert Brandom (University of Pittsburgh). Funding is provided by Canada’s Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) via an Insight Grant, with Ulf as the principal investigator. Jaroslav Peregrin (University of Hradec Králové), Eduardo Barrio (University of Buenos Aires), and Lucas Rosenblatt (University of Buenos Aires) are external collaborators.

Logic is a foundational discipline for philosophy, mathematics, computer science, linguistics, and other fields. Yet there is fierce disagreement about what it is that logic studies, its methodology, and its limits. The goal of ROLE is to develop a new account of the role and nature of logic, which we call Logical Expressivism. The central idea of Logical Expressivism is that the function of logical vocabulary is to make explicit relations of material incompatibility and material consequence that hold in virtue of the meanings of non-logical vocabulary.
